What is A-Level English?
In AS-Level English Language & Literature you complete two of the four units for the full A-level award. In essence one of these units will have you exploring the the representation of voice by comparing fictional prose with transcripts of a speeches, in order to determine the importance of speech/voice in understanding language.
Texts used here typically include the war poets and Victorian or contemporary literature. The other AS-Level English Language and Literature unit focuses on studying in detail chosen texts from a prescribed list. This set list could, alternatively, include themes running through English Literature such as women’s lives, dystopia etc. Whereby you would then show how and why language and expression in literature changes with time.
A2-Level English Language & Literature can begin with the study of a unit looking at the literary nature and language of poetry or dramatic plays. The poems and dramas studied will be from a set list and you will be expected to be able to understand the language across a range of dates and the meaning(s) they convey, whilst also being able to critically assess them as forms of literature. This unit will also require you to compare and contrast those texts from past times to more contemporary writing, which follows the same theme(s).
Depending on the syllabus being studied the final A2-Level English Language and Literature unit could have you looking at the narrative techniques employed, the choice of language and the structure of the writing in a selection of texts. Alternatively, you might have to produce a portfolio of work discussing the language and literature of three different authors from a given list or even possibly three distinct genres of writing, such as narrative, factual and evaluative comment.
Learners will cover a variety of A-Level topics during the course, this varies depending on exam boards.
